Games at the Reunion

We had a nice shower in the afternoon on Saturday. They kids kept playing basketball. The other game is string golf. You throw the balls that are tied together on string and try and wrap them around the bars for points. Courtney and Chaney (I hope the name is spelled right) were playing their flutes for us after lunch.

They had gotten a new trampoline with the safety net around it. The guys were trying to figure out how to begin to get all those parts together to form anything at all! Lydia tried to help them, too. That's when they actually began to get something accomplished! :-)

Back to School

This is an article I wrote in our church newsletter telling about the In Christ Image Training we took online. I would encourage anyone to take the course. Go to www.frangipane.org and click on the ICIT button.

Bob and I went “back to school” six months ago. We enrolled in the In Christ’s Image Training course online taught by Francis Frangipane. We had two chapters to read and two audio sermons to listen to each week. At the end of each chapter there was a practice test with two essays and eight multiple choice questions for us to complete. At the end of each lesson, we had a real test to send in online and have it graded. The tests showed how much I could retain from what I read but the real learning took place in everyday life.

The first six weeks were about Christlikeness and having the unoffendable nature of Christ. Situations came up where I could have easily been offended instead of becoming like Jesus. I had to choose not to take up the offense but to forgive, and pray the mercy prayer in each situation. The mercy prayer is saying, “Father, forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing.” I had to let them off my “hook” and not hold them responsible for the hurt they caused me. At the same time, I needed to show Christ’s love to those who hurt me and pray for God’s mercy in their lives. As each situation came, the things I learned came to mind. I know God put each situation in my life as a test. Would I respond like Christ or would I become offended and angry?

The next six weeks were about humility. I had to look at my motives for what I do. Am I doing things for God’s glory or for man’s? Do I try to please others or am I trying to please God? It was humiliating for me to really see myself as I am and find that I have a lot of pride. Pride is the greatest enemy we have. Francis likes to ask people, “Do you know the name of the most powerful spirit opposing most Christians?” It is Yahweh. God opposes the proud. (See James 4:6.) When we have pride, the Spirit that stands to resist our endeavors is not demonic, it’s God.

Francis taught us that the Beatitudes (Matthew 5) are progressive. We need to become poor in spirit, be mournful about how poor we really are, and become meek before we can truly hunger and thirst for righteousness. If we know how poor we are without Christ, we will be at the place where God can use us. When we think we are “something” then God won’t let us be “anything!” If we have pride, God will bring situations into our lives where we will become humble. He has a way of breaking our pride and allowing us to come to the place where we know that we can’t accomplish anything of value without Him. I want to be able to let God have the glory for all I do.

The third lesson was about prayer. I learned that God is looking for people who will see situations as opportunities to pray instead of a time to be critical. Why did God tell Abraham what He was going to do with Sodom and Gomorrah? He wanted Abraham to ask for mercy for the people. Abraham didn’t look at Sodom and say, “God, it’s about time you killed the perverts!” He wasn’t angry. He asked God for mercy. A quote from the manual, “God works with man to establish the future and, in the process of determining reality, He always prepares a merciful alternative. Urgent, merciful, redemptive prayer shoots right through the mercy door and enters God’s heart.”

In Psalm 53:2 it says, “God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if there is anyone who understands, who seeks after God.” I want to be the one who understands what God is doing in any given situation and to seek God in and through it. Lord, help me to see through your eyes and to pray Your word and Your will in every situation. “While humility opens our eyes to perceive our need, prayer enables us to appropriate God’s answer. Redemptive intercession, allied with divine intervention, can transform the world around us.”

The final lesson was about unity. Unity is vital in the body of Christ. In Psalm 133 it tells us that where brethren dwell together in unity, God commands His eternal blessing. In the book of Acts (1:14 NKJV), the disciples were “with one accord” and then the power of the Holy Spirit came (Acts 2:1). Unity precedes power. If we want the power of the Holy Spirit, we must work for unity. We must be unified in our warfare and fight as “one man” for our cities and our nation. “Whenever we pray against the spiritual forces of wickedness over a region, our first line of offense is praying for churches to be united in their worship and their warfare. It takes a citywide church to win the citywide war.”

I would encourage anyone to take this course. Bob and I will be certified to facilitate a group by the first of the year. It is more cost effective to take it this way than individually online like we did. The Lord willing, we hope to begin a group in our home in 2007.

Firecracker Dog!

Our dog Cinnamon went completely nuts when Kyle's friends came and set off Fireworks on the 4th. If we hadn't tied her up, she would have gotten burned or something. She would come and try and catch the fireworks as they blasted and flew in the air. We laughed so hard. We had never seen anything like it. She is usually very scared but she would go up and bark at the burning fire and try and catch it when it came down from the sky. The Roman candles were the funniest because she would bark and try and chase one and then another would come out so she was back and forth over and over. It was truly a blast!

Face Painting

Breanna and I face painted at a festival in a nearby town. We had a blast together for Thursday and Friday evening. We took turns painting faces and giving the kids face tattoos. We probably each painted 50 faces, arms or hands. I did the Chicago bulls one. It looks kinda like it, right?

You know you're not newlyweds when...

This conversation began at our 25th anniversary meal when Bob and I were talking together and I told him about the bout with diahrea I had that morning. Jezra began the "you know you're not newlyweds" by saying "...when you talk about diahrea at your anniversary meal."

Here's the ones we can remember and some I'm making up on the spot:
You know you're not newlyweds when...
  • Your idea of romance is reading a book in bed together.
  • You celebrate your anniversary with your teenagers.
  • The wife says, "Let's go to bed early," winking to the husband and he says, "I think I'll stay up and watch TV." (This would probably never happen to us!)
  • You go on a walk together for a romantic conversation and when you get home your wife says, "That was worth it! We got to talk to the neighbors for the first time." (This really happened soon after we moved to the place we live now. It's a running joke between us whenever we are on a walk and we talk with someone else.)
  • You spend your time together talking about the kids, the mortgage, and your jobs.
  • Sweet nothings really are nothing.
  • The fire between you is the candle you lit at the table.
  • You begin to kiss each other on the couch and the kids tell you to "get a room." (We always answer, "You get a room; this is our house!")
  • Your teenager says that he would like to have a marriage as good as yours. (This really happened.)
  • People tell you that you act like newlyweds!

25th Anniversary

Last night we celebrated our 25th by having a candlelight meal with our teenagers. It started a "You know you aren't newlyweds when..." discussion. We had a lot of fun. Jezra fixed a meal of pork chops with dijon sauce, mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli, and salad. We ate on our china. It was fun. You especially aren't newlyweds when you eat with your teenagers on your anniversary! Don't you think my "pirate" husband looks awesome!

Inside Amber and Matt's New House

Amber and Matt have no internet access for a while until they can put a phone jack in their "office." I thought I'd let you take a tour of their new house since they won't be updating their blog for a while. The top and bottom picture are in their dining room. The middle one is their living room. It's all one long room with pillars and cupboards separating them.

Another great report for Breanna's tumor

The doctor says that tumor shows that it is diminishing a bit. She said that radiology would say that there was no significant change but she said that the contrast was less which can only be a good thing. It is still there and we can see it on the computer screen but you could see that the cysts that are inside the tumor were less prominant from last time (8 months ago) to this time (yesterday). She asked Breanna what she's doing. Breanna said, "Praying." She said, "Well keep it up; it sure is working!"

We had a good time at Amber and Matt's new house afterward. We ate Amber's homecooked meal (which was left over from their 2nd anniversary meal that they ate together Monday evening). It was delicious: Lasagna, garlic toast, salad, green beans with sesame seeds, and chocolate/peanut butter pie. We enjoyed our time with them and got home last night around 9:30.
Now, with Grandparents, he finally realizes he's free and ready to show his pleasure at that!
Adding Matt to the picture makes us all giddy and Kyle even more apprehensive about the day!
The whole family (except for Jezra who decided to stay home) is happy! Again, Kyle isn't ready to show his pleasure.

We're very happy it's all over! He's still not so sure!
He's not sure what to do now that it's all over!
Another wonderful cake made by Karen.

Awesome Graduation Weekend for Kyle

The weather couldn't have been better...sunny and around 75 degrees. Our open house was to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday but one couple actually coming at 1:50 while we were scrambling around to get the food on the table. We had a good turnout with a lot of people coming early and then about an hour break without any new people. At around 4:30 we had another "rush" of people. During the break the kids and some adults played games of horseshoes, badminton, and croquet. I enjoyed talking with everyone who came. It wasn't rushed soI felt like I had enough time to visit with everyone.

Graduation was Sunday afternoon. I think around 4oo people graduated. It took a little over an hour. It was nice to see some of the parents of kids I hadn't seen in a while. We took a lot of pictures afterward. Kyle is offically finished with high school.

I was going to upload some pictures but it's not working right now. I'll do that soon.

Tomorrow we head to Indianapolis for Breanna's MRI. Her last was 8 months ago and the tumor had shrunk just a little. Of course we're hoping it has shrunk all the way and isn't there this time! We will stop in and see Matt and Amber's new house in Muncie. They moved in last weekend.

It makes for a busy week.

Catching up a bit

It's been a while since I wrote about what's happening at the Brenneman household. There's been some changes. First of all, Dustin has returned to live with his mother. We had him for 1 year and 5 months. We feel good about this move and are praying that things work out with him and his mom. You can join us in praying for them.

Next we have a high school graduate coming up. Kyle will graduate on Sunday, June 4. We are having his open house on Saturday, June 3 from 2-6 p.m. at our house. Anyone who wants to can come. Kyle's plans are to work full time and not go to school right away. He's pretty burned out with school work and is looking forward to not having any. He talks about getting an apartment with friends. We'll see what happens. I'd rather he waited a year or so to do that. He still feels young to me even though he'll be 19 in October. Somehow Amber felt much older at this age. I often wonder why that is.

Bob and I will celebrate our 25th anniversary on June 14. We will probably just take the family out to a nice dinner. We've been open housed out with two in a row and one next year for Jezra. I can't think of having another. We don't have the money to really get out of town together but maybe next year. I'm thankful that God knew what he was doing when he brought Bob to me. We've had a great 25 year, not without our struggles but great none the less.

In July, Bob and I will be heading out to Iowa for a conference of the training class we've been doing with Francis Frangipane. It's a 4 day conference for all who have completed at least two tracks of the In Christ Image Training. We will make this our anniversary trip together.

We'll be finished with level one of this training by the third week of June. It's been a worthwhile course. So much of what we were learning was timely and spoke into what was happening in life at that time. God is so good! He knows what we need before we do and orchestrates our lives to coincide with what He wants to teach us through our trials.

At the end of July we have a Brenneman family reunion at a cousin's place in Midland, Michigan. We always enjoy these reunions. Our kids know Bob's cousins and their kids better than any others because we have gotten together almost every year with his aunts, uncles, and cousins for 14 years now. Breanna was 1 year old when we began getting together. Bob's grandma was aging and couldn't make the trip to Indiana from Iowa anymore so Bob's aunt began these reunion so she'd be able to see everyone. Bob's grandma passed away a few years ago but we keep on having them. The cousins are beginning to have the reunions at their houses to give the aunts and uncles a break. We meet usually on Saturday and Sunday. We all pitch in to help with the big meal on Saturday noon. The out of town guests either stay with family or get a motel.

I will be working 4 days a week this summer. Kyle, Jez, and Breanna all have summer jobs. That will help them stay busy. I can't find enough work to keep them busy in the summer anymore so I'm glad they will all have jobs. Kyle and Jez work as a desk clerk at a hotel (Jez hasn't started yet but hopefully will soon). Breanna will begin working a McDonald's after school is out. They are all growing up!

That's my busy schedule. I'll try and keep up with my blog more but I can't promise anything!

Open House Guests

The girls are Amber's college friends and the man is Matt's grandpa.

Open House Cake

The cake was made by Aunt Karen. She did a great job!

New house for Amber and Matt

They will most likely move in around May 20th. It's only a few houses down from where they live now.

Graduation Day (1 down, 1 to go!)

She finally did it! (Actually she found out she still needs 3 credit hours before she will get her diploma but she will by the end of the summer!)
